I go by the intent of the law rather than the letter of the law. The reason Apprentice Alf doesn't want you to de-DRM loaned books is because he doesn't want you to steal them, which I don't do. Making your borrowed book usable (or, in my case, "readable") and then returning it on time, is not harming anyone. Whatever the publisher and writer gets paid from the borrowed book is still being paid and the book is not being stolen.
