Purely hypothetically speaking, perhaps an increase in "distance" requirement (i.e. how far back) requires a corresponding increase in the amount of energy required? Thus, the ability of technology to come up with sufficient energy to travel further back is only developed further and further into the future, thus, the origin is moving further from the desired destination.
I think the above made sense. Did that make sense?
