If you don't like Calibre you can add a text entry in a config file (when connected to USB once) and then there is an extra item to export highlight & Annotation/bookmarks (and location) in the context menu for a title. The text file is created on the root just for that selected ebook and can be copied when ereader connected with USB.
The Kindle sticks all annotations of all ebooks in one file and only syncs to other Kindles or Kindle apps and only ebooks from Amazon Website.

Is there a 'for dummies' text on this with extremely detailed step by step instructions?

It sounds like it does what I want if I can just figure it all out from getting the Kindle book into the Kobo and all the rest.
