Changing the file extension will not allow you to remove the media-type. It will be the same. It needs to be there.

The reason for the split files is for portable devices. When RMSDK was first released for Readers, it was released for the Sony Reader PRS-505. So in order to work with it, it was necessary to have the split files. And yes, the files are still needed to be split.
