You shouldn't need to be restricted to using the breadcrumbs to get back where you came from, though. The publisher *should* provide a return link to get back, but if they haven't there should be [Back to page xxx] button on the left above the breadcrumb bar.

That's the way it's always been on the eInk Kobos, I'm afraid. the footnote pop-up widget seems to be of the PlainText variety rather than RichText.

I also see this. I'm not sure whether it's always been this way as the buttons do work as expected in other parts of the GUI.
