I got someone who was at least willing to look into it. I have a ticket ID now and he said he would escalate the issue "so that required and needful action can be taken"... Let's see whether that leads anywhere.

Calibre 6.6 works for me with MOBI files (did not try EPUB because they have no cover anyway). The file name (ascii-ized by Calibre) appears as the book title. The email subject seems to have no effect on this whatsoever.

My guess is that this was not a deliberate move by Amazon, but rather somehow connected to the rollout of firmware version 5.15.1 which fixes the EPUB cover issue. After all, this is first and foremost a server-side conversion issue. Crashing MOBI delivery before (extended) EOL is not the best way forward, though
