Use USB instead of Amazon's broken Cloud service. Eject without unplugging so as to charge while Kindle does the power hungry indexing.
Calibre does better mobi, dual mobi, azw3/KF8 and KFX from epub often than Amazon does, even though the preferred upload for publishing is epub.
