I read the first one back in either junior high or high school. I don't remember a whole lot about it, but it wasn't an awful book. It also wasn't a great book, but it wasn't something I regretted reading, so it's worth a shot.
It was a hell of a lot better than the "Shatnerverse" Star Trek novels he co-wrote. Those were absolutely ridiculous.
I'm aware that's not much of a recommendation, but it's the best I've got.
