Do you use KoboTouchExtended plugin in Calibre? You can set up additional columns in Calibre to store information whether a book has been read or not, the date you accessed the book for the last time, the position/bookmark of the internal file in the book when you have started reading that book. That information can be stored then in Calibre and passed to the new device when you set it up.

I would recommend also the Kobo Utilities plugin to make a backup of the internal database in Kobo so if you mess or the database gets corrupted you can restore a backup.

What I think it isn't passed is the date the book was added to the Kobo if it hasn't been read, at least that's the reason I started messing with the database directly instead of using the plugin years ago, but it might have been changed later. Someone else might confirm that part, or start using the KoboTouchExtended plugin to pass all that information and see if it's enough or if you need more.
