I wondered if I had done something wrong with the reader so, in a way, this is a relief to me.

In your case, if you don't like the lighting issues on your screen, I would exchange the Clara 2E. I've never seen any reason to "put up with" defects on a new device. In my case, I didn't even notice this on the HD 3 until months after I owned it. I have to look for it to see it. As I say, I thought I had somehow gotten dirt into it.

EDIT: I've just checked two Clara HDs and a Tolino Shine 3 and they all have these marks in the same position. Two aren't as noticeable because they're further down. All four of these readers have the same screen, 300 dpi with 13 LEDs (7 white and 6 orange/amber). This makes me think that your screen is mounted a slightly higher in the housing than it should be. Or maybe the light layer was attached higher than it should have been.
Thanks for this! Yes that looks exactly the same. In any event, I contacted Kobo customer service and they've agreed to replacement (for dead pixels, which doesn't seem correct, but *shrug*)

If I had to guess (which is all it would be), it does look like the light layer is a little higher than it should be, because the lighting is perfectly even throughout the screen until pretty much the bottom centimetre or so of the screen. If they were lower down it wouldn't matter but I can see them if I'm looking dead on at my screen.

Otherwise, it's a great wee reader. I'm not sure how I feel about the lack of buttons, as I haven't had a buttonless reader since my PW2, but it is wonderfully light!
