I instantly recognized the black marks below the progress bar because my PocketBook HD 3 has them, in (what appears to be) the same position as yours -- maybe not quite as big. In my case they don't seem to hurt the screen's lighting at all, but I notice them when I look down from an angle. I wondered if I had done something wrong with the reader so, in a way, this is a relief to me.

In your case, if you don't like the lighting issues on your screen, I would exchange the Clara 2E. I've never seen any reason to "put up with" defects on a new device. In my case, I didn't even notice this on the HD 3 until months after I owned it. I have to look for it to see it. As I say, I thought I had somehow gotten dirt into it.

EDIT: I've just checked two Clara HDs and a Tolino Shine 3 and they all have these marks in the same position. Two aren't as noticeable because they're further down. All four of these readers have the same screen, 300 dpi with 13 LEDs (7 white and 6 orange/amber). This makes me think that your screen is mounted a slightly higher in the housing than it should be. Or maybe the light layer was attached higher than it should have been.
