My account - about 8 years old - was apparently deleted from kobo.com and had to create a new one with the same email address but different password (the old one was "too weak").
So I signed out from my 3 Kobo devices.
When you sign out from your device, it gets reinitialized but luckily, the books are not removed and are automatically reimported in the database.
I had fortunately copied the Kobo eReader.conf file so I could more or less set up the devices as they were before.
Reading progress I had to update with the Kobo Touch Extended Driver. Unfortunately I couldn't find a way to restore Annotations. No big issue anyway.
Sync is now working again.
