I had the same thought. The chats are side by side and offset. You can see exactly when a new private chat starts alongside the original chat. If the timing of these chats is so important, then reading the chats one after another (by hiding the images and displaying the text hidden in the epub version) will be useless to understanding what is happening in the book. On the other hand, maybe the timing means nothing. In my Goodreads review, someone commented that some of the usernames were changed with no explanation (worm28 to worm38, for example) and the person commenting thought it would mean something later on, but it turned out to have nothing to do with anything. It was a mistake, pure and simple.
