As you found, copying them yourself on disk does not make GC aware of the images again.

Either a) don't do that , just add the images from where ever they are back to GC (it accepts drag/drop), or; b) just click Yes when it asks you about overwriting each one.

I see I need to revisit this issue more--There are places in GC that use resources/images/generate_cover as temporary directory...

Plus it would be nice if the 'overwrite?' dialog gave the file name.
