That's up to the individual device plugin. There is no way for calibre to know when it is safe to proceed despite an error or to know which book the plugin was transferring when the error happened. The control is entirely in the hands of the plugin. The plugin can catch exceptions and log them and finish transferring the rest and the re-raise an error if it likes.
