I have not read the book but the movie was a real eye-opener.
Even more shocking, the last of the Magdalen Asylums was not closed until 1996. And it wasn't because of any moral awakening that the treatment of the girls was essentially slavery; it was because most homes in Ireland by then had their own washer and dryer, and the demand for laundry services had dropped off.
