It certainly can be done. Using batteries to store excess energy when things are working. This is very common with most solar homes. During the middle of the day when most of the electricity is generated but not used it is stored in batteries and/or capacitors. Then at night when it is needed it is drawn from the batteries.
This is actually part of the "grand solar plan" which I feel to many important people have been ignoring. I think it is feasible and we should focus our efforts on solar.
