I've been collecting ebooks since I first picked up a pdb format ebook for a Palm PDA. On my computer, I got started with .lit format ebooks using the Microsoft Reader application in 2001. So it's been around 23 years though I didn't switch over to ebooks full time until ~2007. Baen was binding CDs of ebooks into some of their hardcovers so buy 1 hardcover, get a collection of free ebooks starting with the Honorverse CD in 2002. Admitedly, the formats on that one were likely not very familiar to current ebook readers.
