Refreshes are how many pages you have to read (or just turn over) to get automatic refresh. 12 means 12 pages for automatic refresh.
Refurbished devices doesn't have to have shorter lifespan. It means they were repaired by factory from faulty devices. What was faulty, how it was repaired, well, no one can tell. But I have one Palm Treo 680 that I purchased refurbished and it still works.
