Here's where it started getting weird: I'm pretty sure it would only happen if I switched workspaces using keyboard shortcuts, as opposed to clicking the desktop pager, so I wasn't sure if it was specific to my switching shortcuts (Ctrl+Alt+J/K). Also, I think it may have only reproduced while switching workspaces in one of the two directions (prev/next workspace), so either only Ctrl+Alt+J or Ctrl+Alt+K. Finally, I'm pretty sure I saw the issue reproduce on both XFCE and KDE, as I've used similar layouts/workflows on both DEs.
The circumstances were so bizarre and specific that I felt I should try to diagnose the problem better before opening a Github issue. I haven't opened a PDF on amd64 KOReader in some time, but when I try now I'm having trouble making the issue reproduce (2022.07 on KDE).
