Amazon believes, with some justification, that you don't buy an ebook or film but only rent it. There was a case some years ago where there was a problem with a book (copyright is the only thing I can think of) and they solved it by removing the book from the device that downloaded it, probably thousands of devices.
I experienced this myself. Years ago I bought the video download of Parade's End and we enjoyed it so much that we watched it almost every year thereafter. This winter I lined up episode one and wound up paying $4.99 for it -- a single episode. I should have put a charge-back on my Visa card, but for $4.99 it didn't seem worth the bother.
And I could find no way to complain to Amazon about it. (And there again I was trapped by the "is it worth the effort?".)
