But it was un-checked (I made sure), when I turned on the Kobo wifi in order to use the beta-web browser to see if I could copy from mine&partner's refugee poetry project site onto KoReader's note app.

And instantly KOBO OS began updating - from 4.20's (to 4.33). I cut the house's internet connection, but I was still too late. And following that it was baby clean (with books, however) and refused to accept a koReader update, but instead started over with choice of language, while demanding Kobo desktop on the Mac be opened. Which then wanted an update - so, very narrow path I did not know where would lead: koReader install prevention or what?
Of course, that option does not turn off either syncing or firmware updated. It explicitly states that it is for the "Background sync" and the comment refers to the "daily Automatic Sync". When you turn that on, the device will do a full sync once a day during the selected time period. If you turn it off, that full sync will not happen. The device will sync at various other times based on what you are doing. Opening or closing a purchased book will sync the reading status of that book. Going to the the book list will trigger a sync for any new books as will going to the home screen. There are timers involved that prevent it happening every time, but, apart from turning of WiFi, the device will sync when it needs to. Some of the syncs will check for firmware updates, but, not all.
