I've read threads where people talk about their db being 7+ gb in size which is a large amount of space but then I don't have a reference point on *how* big their library is - is it 1 gb or 100 gb?

This also depends on what formats you have in your library and whether you have high-resolution covers.
The library I indexed for searching is 7.6 GB and the size of the search db is 3.7 GB. In that library I have only epubs, all covers are high quality.
My main library is over 50 GB and I'm not going to index that.
