Yeah, there were several such cases back before ebook days. One author I liked (Doris Egan/Jane Emerson) was unfortunate enough to leave both of her series unfinished. The first was discontinued by the publisher, the second was more mysterious and I still don't know the exact reason. Health issues, I think. Both are still unfinished and will presumably stay so. Not every author wants to self-publish.
