Uncle Robin, I have been working my way through Margery Allingham's books over the last 18 months, one every now and then in between others. The first one is pretty awful, the second and third are a bit silly but getting better, but after that she really hits her stride. I am really enjoying them.

Better than Sayers I think, because she was so in love with her own creation. Allingham started off doing Albert Campion as a bit of a spoof on Lord Peter I think, but he has developed his own gravitas. It's his "silly ass" persona that made the first few books a bit tedious.
