Just wanted to thank davidfor again and comment about SD cards.
When I originally wrote the (downloaded) image from davidfor onto the original SD card (using Vconsols's Image Writer) I got a write error. I noticed that Vconsole also had a Flash Drive Tester so I downloaded and ran that on the card. It said there were 2 errors: 1 recoverable and 1 not. Then I ran it 2 more times and the card passed both times. Then I wrote the new firmware image successfully and the Kobo has been fine since. It even wrote the (automatic) firmware update successfully. While uSD cards are not expensive I was happy that the Vconsole Flash Drive Tester 'seemed' to fix my problem on the spot.
