Remember MS wants $$ to 'officially bless' a driver. Many manufacturers of hardware may tweak the generic standard 'chip makers' version to support features on their equipment.
I remember heaving a Turtle beach sound board that Win(XP) would detect the basic chip and that would disable all the surround /optical features.
