Turn the lighting down to a point where you can read the screen but it doesn't look at all bright.

I suspect you need to have your eyes tested. Eye tests also include tests for glaucoma. Discuss this issue with your optician who may recommend other tests or glasses for use with your ereader (polaroid sunglasses with lenses for reading, for example).
