Now I understand why the books weren't opening at least - the default going to KOReader BUT KOReader is no longer installed - it doesn't show up in the app folder. I think I remember also not really liking it and must have uninstalled but some things are left in the registry. I think I really need to reformat the whole thing back to factory settings and start over, but I can't find anything in the manual.

edited - just googled how to reset it and duh, found my OWN post last year on here asking the same question. And that's why I threw it in a drawer b/c I was frustrated with it. But found how to factory reset so off I go to try that now
