Regarding the mods, the newer ones are named Nickel* due to my NickelHook library (which allows for safer and highly integrated mods), and as PeterT mentioned, it was called that since the reader application is named nickel.

Given that the codenames are themed, you'd reasonably expect that the built-in applications would also have a theme, which they do... and it's not elements/metals—it's the -ickel suffix (e.g., fontickel, sickel, pickel, nickel) .
