@candyland550: Have you read a book on your new ereader yet?
My personal advice for new ereader users is very simple: Put a book on it and read.
Don't worry about calibre, collections, series etc until later. Nothing that anyone has mentioned in this thread is in anyway mandatory. These devices work fine without calibre. You can simply copy books to the device manually with no problems. And if you want to buy books from Kobo, you don't ever need to connect it to a PC.
Read a book on it. Play with the options. Work out what you like and don't like. Then you can decide what you need.
Long term, calibre is a good idea. It is great for managing the library. You can update the metadata if you so desire and have calibre update the device. If you are getting books from multiple shops in different formats, then it can be used for converting books to the appropriate format for your device.
But, for now, read a book and enjoy your new ereader. Or maybe you will discover you don't like it and want to go back to the tablet. Or paper books.
