It's true, this is a legit update to Windows 10 and it does not need to be activated.

They think they can make all their income from Web services AKA Cloud and Office 365 subs, hence Win10 mostly free and usually no issue with activation of an old MS Office (but Libre Office may suit better even on Windows).

You have to upgrade Windows 7/8 in place. Just using the key may not work. But it's is an activated copy of Windows 7/8, then it will work. But you do have to upgrade the same version. Home for home, pro for pro, etc.
