I've been looking at the code at Github, and I've noticed commit ba8f4fb (6 days ago, so the 18th I guess) that's described like so:
Fix a regression in 6.0 that broke rendering of first page of EPUB as cover when the EPUB has no actual cover
That sounds uncannily like the bug that I've noticed with 6.0, and 6.1, so it may have been fixed already, and could well be available in 6.2.
Actually, I've installed the source, and when I run that, it seems to work all right again.
