I made a column using the Add Your Own Columns, making it a column built from other colums as ownedbycats suggested. In the Template field I have

program:test(field('comments'), 'Yes', 'No')
Show checkmarks is selected, and sort/search is yes/no. I get a red X if no comments and a green check if there are.
