I don't think this comparison is perfect: you are talking format and my guess is that others here are thinking about content.
For example, I have most of my digital photos in .jpg format and I hope to be able to view them in 30 years. I've also saved tax records etc as .pdf and likewise would hope to be able to read these for quite a while.
If .jpg or .pdf start to fall out of favor, I bet there will be a conversion program available to change them to whatever format comes next (just like you can read the contents off of your old floppies now and transfer them to a dvd).
