Thanks ... I did look at the manual too.

I am using Windows Defender and have made an exclusion for "calibre.exe" but that didn't seem to make a difference. (Am I right in reading the error message that the issue is well before any smtp relay issues as the OS appears not to be able to action the send email function?)

Are there any expected changes in behaviour on e-mail between versions? I have been very successfully using the e-mail function without a dedicated e-mail relay, is that now a requirement?
