That error is means the plugin has not been installed properly. But, the plugin is not used at all when sending books to the device. That is purely calibre, or potentially the KoboTouchExtended driver, if you have that installed. The plugin can be configured to automatically fetch the reading status when the device is connected, but, everything else is done only when you select an option.

Do any of the function run when you press the toolbar button for the plugin?

Otherwise, you can remove it to prove whether it is this plugin or something else causing the problem. Or run calibre in debug mode and see if there are any error shown in the log when you close calibre.
