Not just the AI, either. Hitting an NPC with a sufficiently powerful magic spell can fling their corpse through the ceiling. Unfortunately, I needed something from the NPC's corpse in order to progress in the quest...

I noclipped outside the level to see if I could find him. Alas, nothing.
