I simply have no store account (no payment method) on my kobos and the Kindles never leave the house (rarely even used). I only buy Amazon ebooks via the website.

Though I have no idea if that includes Kindles. They are disabling "on device" purchases for older kindles. I wish there was an obvious place to disable it, or that "logging out" on the Kindle didn't cripple it.
My Kobos are all set up with Sideloaded Mode, thus not logged in. Actually simply hides the mostly pointless for me home page.
The only Kindle Device setting I see on Amazon site is to disable collection of personal data. Doesn't apply to older devices.
One Kindle account was setup with a gift voucher as payment method and that never has more than $10. Currently exhausted.
I have no payment methods enabled on Android Playstore on phones or tablets.
