Put the storage card in PC (via USB adaptor if no card reader, they are cheap). Use the file manager (explorer) to copy your local folder/directory contents to a folder called books on the card. The issue is Android MTP.

Thanks for the info, I have also read the post from Georgemk (thanks also) I may have deleted the original folder on the device for receiving books in my efforts to send them direct to the card. I have decided now to forego the card. Can I simply create a folder on the android device, call it EBooks, and instruct Calibre to send new books to the Ebook folder
