However, I think converting first to .ttf may be necessary as I received an error when editing the .otf. I'm a mere novice but have successfully edited weights of .ttf fonts using jackie_w's instructions.
I looked at the problem more closely and found out that:

1. The texts are really in "italics" only.
2. Other fonts (Kobo default and sideloaded ones display the texts properly as italics (even in Calibre)
3. Bookerly is the one font displaying it incorrectly.

My problem now is i want to have the other fonts display it incorrectly as Bookerly as I like bold italics for foreign words like in the example
