After a while the plastic ages and becomes brittle which means pieces break of and tears develop. It's a fiddly job to replace it, but since they had to work on that wheel anyway and they probably replace the protectors on a daily basis I was more than willing to pay to have the repair person replace them.
Two spokes had snapped and needed replacing, plus the wheel had deformed a bit and had to be straightened. I ended up paying €37.50, €1.50 for two new spokes, €6.95 for the protector and the rest was labour. Not too expensive luckily.
