It's possible that it does not support the security protocols (TLS 1.2+ for instance) which are needed to connect to many websites now. This is pretty much driven by the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) which restricts which protocols can be used to maintain a secure environment for a company that wants to accept, process, store or transmit credit card information.
There does seem to be a procedure for downloading the 2.2.1 firmware and sideloading it to a Nook. See
