I don't know how you arrive at 8 years for the Touch Lux 2. The latest firmware available from the support page is 5.20.1157, released in 2019. That would make it ~5 years of support, better than the Touch Lux 3 which is on the same firmware. Problem is that the 2019 firmware does not support the certificate needed for Adobe DRM.

5 years of support for one device, 2-3 years for the next. There is no consistency, other than that the more expensive devices gets prioritized.

I'm not sure I'd consider Mobileread users as the benchmark for an average eReader user.
