Few authors are willing to pay for such services out of pocket (and often cannot afford to do so on the gamble that expenses will be recouped from book sales). It is the rare book that will not benefit from such services.

And while independent editorial services can be ignored by authors who believe they can do it all themselves, the fact is they generally do not do a good job and help continue the decline in literacy in the U.S.
