If you only use the Kindle around the house, the strappy version probably isn't necessary, though obviously if you drop the strappy version while it's closed it does not open the way the Amazon Cover does, so it does provide more protection. The strappy version really is best as an out-of-home case because it affords that level of protection both in terms of padding and not being likely to open inside a bag if jostled.

But for around-the-home use, the strappy version is just fine too; the strap tucks nicely behind the Kindle (between the Kindle and the back of the case) and is completely out of the way. It can be left there indefinitely. That's where I put it when I'm reading.
