RPG guidebooks have been among the most scanned titles out there, I think someone at WotC have seen them appearing online and are mistaking them for the 'digital' copies they sell. Of course, anyone that wants digital copies now can just turn to illegal sources

... I recall seeing txt copies of DND manuals back in the 80's on BBS's, with ASCII graphics for the monsters and other illustrations (Probably around the last time I played any RPG, lol)...
