Is there an efficient way to avoid the OTA firmware upgrades? Does renameotabin.zip still work? In my last update, the WIFI must have turned on itself. I was keeping my kindle in airplane mode all the time, enabling wifi only for a fraction of time to refresh the screensaver image.

Yes, the renameotabin extension works perfectly. It will completely disable the OTA binaries by renaming them. Important note: you need to rerun the extension after any update or firmware installation since that will replace the files that you renamed.
