I had the same problem a few years ago. After reading about it on this forum, using the "save template" when sending books to my device from the computer, did the trick for me.
Connect your ebook reader to your computer. In Calibre, Wait till the "device" icon appears on the main bar. Click on the small triangle to the right of the icon and a menu appears: click on "configure this device". You can enter a template as follows:
{author_sort}/{title}--{series_index}-{series}
Click "ok"
Now you can send ebooks to your device and the template does the following: the series name and number will be incorporated into the filename on the ebook reader. Now, when I open my ebook reader, I can see the series name and number in the filename of each ebook. It also allows me to search for it on my ebook reader (pocketbook touch HD).
It is not a perfect solution, but good enough for me.
