This description reminds me of
Between the Strokes of Night by Charles Sheffield. Humans have found a way to slow life processes (through a combination of drugs and low temperature) and thus enable travel across interstellar distances without resorting to FTL or generation ships.
(There are
two versions of the book; the author went back and revised some things in light of current scientific developments.)
